FUJIFILM Specialty Ink Systems Ltd.'s Journey to Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL)
FUJIFILM Specialty Ink Systems Ltd. (FSIS), based in Broadstairs, Kent, has made significant strides in waste management through its commitment to Valpak’s Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) certification. FSIS’s journey towards ZWTL commenced with an audit conducted in 2023.
Why Valpak for ZWTL Certification?
Having been a long-standing client of Valpak for their packaging compliance needs, FSIS chose Valpak to oversee their ZWTL certification due to the transparency, thoroughness, and on-site support provided. They particularly appreciated the face-to-face audit approach, which facilitated real-time observations and immediate discussions about potential improvement opportunities.
The offering was very good as it allowed the process to be open and transparent, with opportunities identified on-site.

In 2023, FSIS underwent a comprehensive on-site audit, during which Valpak assessed their waste streams, treatment processes, and overall waste management system. The audit encompassed all operational departments, including production, packaging, research, development, and waste management. The on-site audit was positively received, enabling quick observations and immediate feedback.
While there were some misunderstandings regarding the criteria looked at during the interim audit, Valpak’s support helped resolve these issues swiftly, ensuring that the remote process did not delay the outcome.
Since obtaining ZWTL certification, FSIS has implemented several enhancements in its waste management practices:
- Moving waste up the waste hierarchy: During the 2023 audit, Valpak identified that wood waste, which accounted for 11.51% of their total waste, was being directed towards energy recovery. Subsequently, FSIS introduced a new contract ensuring that wood waste is redirected for reuse rather than recovery, with improvements expected in the next audit period.
- Increased recycling rate: By reducing the number of general waste bins and establishing recycling stations at strategic locations throughout their facility, FSIS has successfully increased its recycling rate by 3.8% from 2023 to 2024, achieving an overall recycling rate of over 53%.
- Food waste segregation: Following audit recommendations, FSIS has implemented additional food waste bins in the canteen, ensuring that all food waste is sent for anaerobic digestion. This initiative has resulted in measurable reductions in waste and has effectively moved food waste up the waste hierarchy.
FSIS’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond maintaining ZWTL certification. They are dedicated to a range of continuous improvement efforts:
- Solar energy: FSIS is working to boost its renewable energy generation through solar panels, with a goal of supplying 25% of the site’s energy from solar sources.
- Employee engagement: Training and awareness initiatives have been central to their success. Staff receive regular training through toolbox talks and sustainability presentations, enhancing their engagement with waste reduction initiatives. The introduction of a staff suggestion scheme has encouraged employees to contribute innovative ideas for further waste reduction.
Future outlook
FSIS’s success in achieving and maintaining ZWTL certification underscores their strong commitment to sustainability, bolstered by Valpak’s guidance and support. They are on a continuous improvement journey, successfully integrating their sustainability and environmental responsibilities with business growth, demonstrating that a focus on responsible practices can drive new opportunities.
We have yet to see an improvement in customer opportunities, but it has allowed the business to reduce waste and identify opportunities to generate income from specific waste streams.
