Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in EEE (RoHS)

The Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in EEE (RoHS) Regulations came into force in the UK in 2006 with the aim of restricting the use of certain substances in the manufacture of various types of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in order to prevent damage to human health and the environment.

Please note if you have operations overseas you may be affected similar regulations, please contact us on 03450 862 572 for further guidance.

Who is affected?

Organisations will be affected by RoHS if they:

  • manufacture electrical and electronic equipment

  • import electrical and electronic equipment

  • distribute electrical and electronic equipment

If you are unsure whether you are affected by RoHS contact us to request a meeting where we can assess your obligations and offer you practical advice on how to ensure you are fully compliant.

What do you need to do?

There are several options available to ensure that you are compliant with RoHS including:

Product testing

Producers can arrange for their products to be tested in order to assess levels of restricted substances.  Undertaking regular product testing is the most comprehensive approach a company can take to demonstrate their compliance with these regulations.

Compliance declarations

Producers can request a Declaration of Conformity from the manufacturer of each product or component.

Product labelling

Recent changes to the RoHS Directive means that it has been brought into scope of the CE Marking Directive. This means all products that are required to be RoHS compliant should have the CE Mark on them.

You should use 'due diligence' to implement the most relevant compliance process.
